When was the last time you truly stopped?
Do you go through an entire day literally moving or even racing from one thing to the next, filling up every moment until you get into bed? And then even when there are moments during your day when you could stop and check in with how you are feeling, do you find something, anything, to turn your attention to – the computer, checking messages on your phone, having a conversation, thinking about what you have to do next, or one of the favorites . . . what is there to eat? Sound familiar?
With today’s fast paced life-style it is easy to think that you don’t have time to stop or another common thought is that if you do stop you won’t be able to get going again. The thing is that stopping isn’t actually the answer. We can stop and do absolutely nothing or very little, and a lot of people are very good at this, however if we stop and don’t change anything, when we do get going again, nothing has actually changed. This is why you can immediately feel stressed after a holiday or a day off - the stop becomes a momentary pause without any true change.
We are not designed to live each day stressed, tired, exhausted or anxious and we know this because it becomes very taxing on our entire body, taking it’s toll on our physical, emotional and mental health, the quality of our relationships, our work, in fact everything we do - every conversation we have is laced with all that stress and exhaustion we are carrying.
Esoteric Yoga introduces quality. First of all you are offered the space to stop, which is important, but in that you get to learn about choosing a quality that is going to allow you to truly unwind, let go and surrender.
Esoteric Yoga begins with the space for participants to stop and re-connect back with their body. In the stress and anxiousness of the day, it is very easy to dis-connect from the body entirely, not even noticing that your feet are touching the ground when you are walking or feeling your finger tips when you are touching something. Without first establishing this connection with your body, your movements continue to contain the stress, nervous tension, anxiousness and emotions of the day.
Rather than continuing in the rush and stress of the day, you have the space to stop and become still (on the inside) first.
In stopping and re-connecting with our body we then have the opportunity to choose our quality. Our movements can become gentle, we can become aware of how we are feeling inside and we can become present with what we are doing - which is to have our mind focus on what we are doing. In making these choices, the nervous system, along with your whole body, responds and begins to return to its natural harmony and order. This is because harmony and the quality of stillness, as opposed to the raciness of nervous tension, anxiety and emotional re-actions is our most natural quality.
The moment we stop, connect to our body and choose to become gentle and present with ourselves, we can begin to re-connect to the quality of stillness. The quality of stillness is always there, it is us who leave it. When we return to our body and stillness we can then choose to move in away that supports us to remain connected with this energetic quality inside of our body first and foremost. We literally learn to live from the inside out.
Esoteric Yoga reminds us that we can take this quality of stillness into what we do, rather than being pushed and pulled by what is happening all around us.
Even though stillness is our natural way of being, it takes practice and a supportive space to re-establish our connection with our body and awareness of our energetic quality. Esoteric Yoga presents a way for people to re-learn how to live in a way that sustains this inner awareness and way of relating with the world. Holding ourselves in stillness also offers others around us the opportunity feel at ease, to let go and connect with their own stillness. With stress, tension and exhaustion dominating relationships and societies everywhere, this quality of stillness, calm and presence is a very welcome change.
